Today, Giffords PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced its endorsement of two candidates running for election to the US House of Representatives in the greater New York City metro area: Rob Menendez (NJ-08) and Dan Goldman (NY-10).
Kate Moore, Giffords National Political Director:
“Rates of gun violence are spiking to record highs in cities across the United States. Now more than ever, we need leaders in Congress who are ready to tackle our country’s epidemic of gun violence head on. We’re proud to endorse Rob Menendez and Dan Goldman. It is imperative that we send them to Washington DC to maintain our gun safety majority in the House and continue pushing for needed fixes to our broken gun laws—like expanding background checks to all gun sales, closing loopholes that allow domestic abusers to access weapons, and funding community violence intervention programs.”
This slate of endorsed candidates includes:
Rob Menendez (NJ-08): Rob Menendez was born and raised in Hudson County, New Jersey, and has made public service his life’s work. He currently serves as counsel at the national law firm Lowenstein Sandler and as Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. As the grandson of Cuban immigrants and the son of a dedicated public school educator and a trailblazing political leader, he’s always been grounded in the values of his community—respect, tolerance, hard work, New Jersey common sense and the unshakable idea that everyone should have the opportunity and tools to succeed. While his home state of New Jersey has taken decisive action to protect its residents and set an example for other states by enacting some of the country’s strongest gun laws, Menendez knows that there is still more to do to protect his future constituents from harm. Jersey City, where he lives with his wife and two children, has often been impacted by the devastating effects of gun violence—including a 2019 domestic terrorist attack on a kosher grocery store that took the lives of four people, including a Jersey City police officer. In Congress, Menendez will always stand up for stronger gun laws and work to pass the kinds of commonsense legislation needed to save lives, like universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons, and increased funding for gun violence research.
Dan Goldman (NY-10): Throughout his career, Dan Goldman has always strived to ensure that justice is done. As the lead counsel for the first impeachment investigation of President Donald Trump and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York, Goldman took on some of the toughest cases within our legal system. In these roles, he worked to keep New Yorkers safe and hold bad actors accountable—often working to prosecute violent criminals and gun traffickers. Like so many Americans, Goldman knows that we are failing the next generation if we do not do more on gun safety. He supports commonsense proposals to curtail our epidemic of violence, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and implementing waiting periods to purchase guns. He also supports passing extreme risk laws, prohibiting ghost guns and high-capacity ammunition, and repealing the 2005 Protection of Commerce in Lawful Arms Act that provides legal immunity for gun manufacturers and dealers.
